- 4 things I wish Donovan McNabb would tell Robert Griffin III The DC Twitterverse laughed when word reached us that Donovan McNabb wanted to reach out to Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III to offer advice. That struck Hog Heaven as too much TMZ to worry about. We left it alone. Then we saw this story on Philly.com, Last thing RGIII needs is McNabb’s advice. McNabb’s career ended badly, but nothing is more pathetic than to have the online version of The Philadelphia Inquirer tell one of Philly’s greatest sports stars to, well, stfu. McNabb wants to share lessons in media savvy with RGIII. Griffin III has two things McNabb never had, a pass completion rate of 65.6 percent, and charisma. Griffin is rewriting all the rules. He does not need lessons from McNabb in savvy-ness. (Yeah, made-up word.) However, there are things about football I wish McNabb would share with Griffin. Here’s the list. How to manage the transition from running quarterback to passing quarterback? Once, McNabb was the quarterback sens
- Cowboys receivers are most Beast of the NFC East The reputation of the Beast was born in the 1980s through mid-‘90s when Super Bowls were won by the San Francisco 49ers and whoever won the NFC East. That was oh so last century. The NFC Beast is still considered a competitive division. The New York Giants restored some of its luster, but no one calls the Beast toughest in the league anymore. Every Beast team has questionable secondaries. Its O-lines are not the muscular, dominant units of Gibbs and Parcells. There’s one other area where NFC East teams are not so beastly – wide receiver. Long time Hog Heaven readers are familiar with our 6-7-8-9-10-11 benchmark for evaluating receiving corps. It’s a memory device for measuring a team’s No. 2 and the No. 1 receiver. The benchmark applies to wide receivers only. Tight ends do not count The benchmark order is Receptions-Touchdowns-Yards. A No. 2 wide-out should deliver 60 catches, seven touchdowns and 800 yards for his team. The No. 1 re
- Richard Crawford – The Redskins' other turnover machine News out of camp has been that Richard Crawford is lighting it up. I have been a huge fan of his potential from day one and can hardly contain my excitement. A healthy Crawford has to be better than an injured Josh Wilson is at this point. Wilson had a serious injury and I would be surprised if Crawford was NOT the starting CB opposite DeAngelo Hall at least to start the season while Wilson fully heals. It appears they are testing out E.J. Biggers as #3 and trying all three cornerbacks in the slot and on the outside. Crawford, like fellow SMUrf (SMU Redskin) Aldrick Robinson – soon to be Garcon Jr. (mark my words) – had been fairly ignored except as a punt returner last season. At the end of the season when Cedric Griffin was suspended, Crawford saw some playing time at cornerback. Not sure of the totals, but I believe he played less than eight full quarters. In that period, Crawford had an interception and a fumble recovery.
- Decoding the secret Redskins Shanaplan for right tackle Is Tom Compton Mike Shanahan's plan for Redskins right tackle? Many are wondering what the plan for Redskins Right Tackle is. And it's not just insurance companies for RG3 asking the question. Fortunately, there are many apparent facts in addition to clues Shanahan has left for us to decipher. It's clear that Tyler Polumbus is not and was not the plan to start at Right Tackle this year. First off, he rated the 4th worst Right Tackle at pass protection last year in the NFL. The blocking back almost always had to help Polumbus on pass plays. The Redskins want a run offense but not a “run for your life” RG3 offense. His physical characteristics are not ideal for the position either. In addition, a fact I have not seen noted by other analysts – Polumbus constantly fell down on Alfred Morris at the end of runs. Just look at an Alfred Morris highlight reel. Morris is tough and durable. However, we don
- Grossman, Helu at risk? Redskins Offense Unofficial Post-Mini-Camp Roster Projections QB - RG3, Cousins Surprise cut - Rex Grossman Rationale - though with a recovering QB you should have 3 QBs, no team is rushing to take Grossman. You can cut him and leave him off the roster and very likely get him back when needed. Also - Jordan Reed has college QB experience. Maybe they can sneak Pat White onto the Practice Squad - not sure if he is eligible again. RBs - Morris, Thompson, Jamison (and Darrell Young FB) Surprise cut - Roy Helu Rationale - I believe Helu gets cut as he'll likely show injury after they pound him with carries during the preseason. The Redskins are far weaker at Wide Receiver and the secondary than at RB. Royster is already outside looking in. Starting Offensive Line - Williams, Lichtensteiger, Montgomery, Chester, Pashos Backups - Compton, Gettis, LaRibeus, Polumbus. Surprise cut - Tyler Polumbus gets cut from the starting Right Tackle position. I also see him on the ed
- Divine Intervention: Patriots sign Tim Tebow Some stories about other teams are just too good to pass up! It reads like the start of a bad joke. "A duck goes into a bar and orders a drink." A priest, a rabbi a duck and Tim Tebow walk in to the New England Patriots and ask for a football. Bill Belichick looks up and says, "What is this. A joke?" But seriously folks, SI.com reports that the Patriots have already signed free agent quarterback Tim Tebow and expect him to be in mandatory minicamp tomorrow. The last time Belichick and the Patriots saw Tebow in game action was the Divisional Playoff Round following the 2011 season. The Patriots walloped the Tebow-Broncos 43-10 to end Denver's magical season. The Broncos closed the regular season with a three-game losing streak. The Pats kicked off that streak by beating the Broncos at home 41-23. Belichick, or OC Mike McCoy, must see something in Tebow. I wish I knew what that is. The move does not threaten Tom Brady nor, I suspect, back-up QB Ry
- Is Jawan Jamison the Redskins' next Alfred Morris? Jawan Jamison is in many ways another Alfred Morris-like story waiting to happen. Whereas Alfred Morris is a slower model of Walter Payton, Jawan Jamison is a slower Barry Saunders knock-off model. At 5'7" 200 pounds, this guy is a powerful small package. What I like best about him is his one-cut running, his ability to juke defenders in the open field, his ability to stay hidden behind the offensive line until it's too late, and the fact that the only way you can tackle him is by the ankles or a gang tackle. I believe he is faster than his 40 time suggests, especially given that his last year in school he ran with ankle problems. Here's how he compares to Alfred: 1) Likeability and heart ? you want a guy the offensive line likes and is ready to die for. That was the John Riggins lesson. While Alfred is as likeable a football player as it gets, Jamison left school for the pros to help support his sick mom.&nbs
- Robert Griffin III captured on video running, sort of Why do they always show these quarterbacks RUNNING? Because video football LOVES a running quarterback, that's why. - Can Donte' Stallworth and Devery Handerson rescue Redskins receivers? Caption: Donte' Stallworth rejoins the Redskins. I learned in the I/T business that when you upgrade one part of a computer system, you expose the next weakness in that system. That is the state of the Washington Redskins today. With fixes perhaps in place in the secondary and improved health of defensive players, the Redskins must do something about its next area of weakness, wide receivers. Hog Heaven covered the topic a few days ago when we ranked Washington's receivers third-best in the division (see Cowboys receivers are most beast of the NFC East). That story didn't get much play among Redskins fans, although it got a lot of hits from Texas. The coaching staff is not ignoring the issue. They have made some moves. The front office went to the local rent-a-receiver store and checked out Devery Henderson and Donte' Stallworth. Henderson spent his entire career with the New Orleans Saints. The well travelled Stallworth sold his talents to six teams, includi

- Redskins Draft Options: Safety by Jake Russell At the start of free agency, the Redskins had several defined needs: cornerback, right tackle, tight end, safety, inside linebacker and maybe a complimentary running back and wide receiver. - Redskins 2013 Draft Day 3 by Jake Russell On Friday night, the Redskins chose to address two needs with their top picks. One was a pressing need. The other, not so much. - Redskins 2013 Draft Day 2 by Jake Russell The only thing predictable about this draft so far has been its unpredictability. - Report: Brian Orakpo likely to play out final year of contract As the Washington Redskins prepare to enter training camp, linebacker Brian Orakpo’s contract situation is still up in the air, after it was widely believed that the team would likely offer him an extension earlier in the offseason. But reaching an agreement on a new deal could be far more complicated process for both sides. Orakpo is coming off a torn pectoral muscle, after the injury ended both of his last two seasons in Washington. While Orakpo has certainly proven that he is a difference-making pass rusher, the fourth-year veteran still has to prove to the Redskins that he can remain healthy for a full season. So, it makes a lot of sense that Orakpo’s ability to stay healthy seems to be an issue to why both sides are currently not negotiating. Orakpo is entering the final year of his rookie deal, and while locking him up to a long-term contract seems to be part of the Redskins agenda down the line, they have yet to move in that direction. ESPN.com's Dan Graziano writ...
- Redskins owner Dan Snyder sells Johnny Rockets food chain According to Darren Rovell of ESPN, Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder has sold Johnny Rockets, which he bought several years ago. Minnifield was medically cleared earlier this month...
- The Return of Roy Helu Nine months after injuring ligaments in his toe, Redskins running back Roy Helu, Jr. was seen taking handoffs, catching passes, cutting and running full speed. The Redskins front office was forced to bring in competition for 3rd year running backs Helu and Evan Royster because of their injured and ineffective 2012 campaign behind 6th round rookie sensation Alfred Morris. The Redskins drafted Chris Thompson an electric, speedy, shifty running back from Florida State University in round 5 of the 2013 NFL Draft and Jawan Jamison, a do it all bowling ball of a running back similar to his predecessor from Rutgers University, Ray Rice in round 7. Both of these players should provide strong competition for Helu and Royster this season. Last season seemed to end before it started for Helu, from the beginning of training camp he was hampered by an Achilles’ tendon strain. He rested the injury for most of the preseason and then he damaged cartilage in his left big toe in the season opener vs...
- RG3 walking without a limp when not wearing a knee brace According to the Washington Post, while it looked as if Robert Griffin III was limping during the Redskins OTA’s, when he was walking around without the knee brace, he didn’t have a limp. Griffin did appear to limp as he ran sprints at the conclusion of that June 6 practice, but he insisted that it was related to the brace he wears on that reconstructed right knee, and not a setback of some kind. A slight hitch remained evident the final two offseason practice sessions as Griffin did his running off to the side, but he beat tight end Jordan Reed in a race, which leads me to believe that it is indeed the brace and the quarterback still working to strengthen that right leg. When walking brace-free, there is no limp. It will be interesting to see if Griffin continues to wear the knee brace once he’s deemed 100 percent healthy. Tom Brady has been wearing a knee brace since tearing his ACL a few years ago. And some other quarterbacks wear them as protection from getting their knee’s bl...
- Who Is In Competition For The Redskins Final Roster Spots? Redskins training camp is quickly approaching as it is now less than six weeks away. A few weeks ago we visited training camp battles within each position group. We have a firm grasp on who will be the Redskins top 40 players or so on their 53 man roster but the remaining spots are up for grabs. So let’s look at the battles going on for the final roster spots this summer. Each of these players has a golden opportunity to make this team and be contributors for the Redskins. Maurice Hurt, OL Maurice has played all along the OL except at Center. When he was drafted many experts said his talent level wasn’t that far off from the Pouncey Brothers, it’s just that they overshadowed him. Scouts said they felt he would be a steal, and so far- Hurt has turned out to be a great pick. He struggled a little in his first action in 2011 after Kory Lichtensteiger tore up his knee but he played well down the stretch and when he had to fill in when Tyler Polumbus had the concussion and Jordan B...
- Could the government force Daniel Snyder to change the name ‘Redskins’ Daniel Snyder really shook up the room when he made the following comments about changing the name Redskins: “We will never change the name of the team,” the Washington Redskins owner told USA Today this week. “As a lifelong Redskins fan, and I think that the Redskins fans understand the great tradition and what it’s all about and what it means, so we feel pretty fortunate to be just working on next season.” Snyder was asked if he would reconsider his stance if his team loses an ongoing federal trademark lawsuit. “We’ll never change the name,” he said. “It’s that simple. NEVER — you can use caps.” Do you think Daniel Snyder could be eventually forced by the government to change their name? I spoke with an attorney yesterday about the situation and asked him if he felt that the name would be changed and he replied: “Being that it is a Federal Trademark and purchased through the USPTO it will be very hard to beat the Redakins since they own the rights. The only way the name could be r
- Washington Redskins Fans Should Be Glad Robert Griffin III Isn't a Party Animal Social media gives fans 24/7 access to some athletes; guys who like to let people know what they are doing every second of the day. A lot of fans eat up that kind of access to their stars and want to see them out and about having a good time in their respective cities and partying. It's fun. It's what we do, and since professional athletes are able to do it on a different level and scale than us we love to see them 'make it rain'--something that Washington Redskins fans are not likely to see Robert Griffin III doing anytime soon. Of course it helps that he is preparing to get married and settle down. Most of the party animals are singles guys with no ties or responsibilities other than showing up for team functions, practices, and games. However it is not like married guys have to stay home (or do in the NFL)... But when it comes to RG3 fans should not expect to be able to 'bump' into him at the club anytime soon. “I’ve been out in the city I think
- Redskins open to bringing back Tanard Jackson Redskins head coach Mike Shanhan has indicated that he’s open to welcoming back safety Tanard Jackson once he’s eligible to be reinstated by the NFL as he continues to serve a one-year suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy just before last season. “At the safety position, we lost [Brandon] Meriweather and Tanard Jackson last year and you are hoping that both guys will be back, will be back healthy,” said Shanahan, per CSNWashington.com. Skins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett was asked about Jackson. “Obviously if we got Tanard back, you know that’s another bonus because he’s a heck of a football player. I don’t know where that stands with the NFL, but we’d welcome back with open arms.” Jackson is eligible for reinstatement on September 3rd, which is only six days before the 2013 regular season is scheduled to start. - Redskins will likely let Brian Orakpo play out the final year of his contract Dan Graziano of ESPN.com believes the Washington Redskins will let linebacker Brian Orakpo play out the final year of his current contract before working on an extension. Brian Orakpo says he’s not worried about his contract situation with one year left on his deal. For whatever it’s worth, a week ago I believed the Redskins were likely to try to extend Orakpo this offseason, but after spending a couple of days at their minicamp last week and talking to people there, I now believe they intend to let him play out the deal and negotiate next offseason. The Redskins would be smart to wait until after this season to work on a contract extension for Orakpo. They need to see if he can stay healthy in 2013 before giving him a new deal. Need NFL Tickets?
