- Report: Tony Romo probably won’t be ready for mini-camp According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo probably won’t be healthy enough to participate in mini-camp after undergoing back surgery to remove a cyst. My understanding is #Cowboys are fine bringing Romo back slowly. No decision was made. But was told he probably won’t be back for minicamp — Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) May 21, 2013 Romo told the media today that he underwent a “minor” procedure. Hate to break it to Romo, but any type of back surgery isn’t minor. Need NFL Tickets? The post Report: Tony Romo probably won’t be ready for mini-camp appeared first on Pro Football Zone.
- Cowboys Notebook From Inside OTAs IRVING, Texas A skillion quickie impressions from the Dallas Cowboys' work at OTAs at Valley Ranch: Tony Romo isn't Peyton Manning. But being sidelined by the cyst-removal surgery didn't prevent him from light sideline throwing or from counseling teammates. He was especially demonstrative in instructing Dez Bryant how to simulate the footwork needed to pretend he's running against press coverage during route-running practice. Mo Claiborne reports that he's gained six pounds of muscle -- helpful for a cornerback trying to survive in the Tampa-2 scheme. New linebacker Justin Durant is expected to win the strongside job. But he didn't win it on Tuesday. He didn't fully participate, instead workout out on the side while wearing a thick hoodie sweatshirt under his jersey. While Durant sweated out some water weight, Alex Albright and Ernie Sims took some first-team snaps. Kyle Orton did not throw the ball very accurately on Tuesday. It would be helpful if the veteran would ramp it u
- Jason Garrett: Bryant is 'really, really a joy to coach' The transformation of Dallas Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant is in full swing. A day after Bryant claiming that "found" himself", his head coach is toppign that off with his own brand of praise. It was rough for a while with Bryant, but head coach Jason Garrett thinks Dez is "really, really a joy to coach," reports the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "He has such passion for the game," Garrett added. "He loves it. He loves his teammates. He loves to play." Bryant had 92 catches for 1,382 yards with 12 touchdowns in 2012, something he can hang his hat on, but if all this talk of a new Bryant that's comfortable with his life is to be believed, we've seen nothing yet. Garrett and the team can't help but think just how good Dez can be. "Absolutely. That’s our job,” Garrett said. “Our job is to make him the best he can be. ... We watch the tape and say, ‘Boy, you can play so much better. So much better'.... What we do as coac...
- Cowboys would be wise to cut ties with DT Josh Brent The most benevolent organization in professional sports continues to stand by its man. Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent will remain free while awaiting trial for intoxication manslaghter. He'd been hauled into court Friday morning because prosecutors wanted to revoke his 100,000 bond due to problems with alcohol monitoring. According to witnesses at Friday's hearing, Brent had repeatedly missed requirements for his ankle monitor to download information, as well as two appointments with his assigned county officer. Brent's attorney believes that his client's being treated unfairly because of his association with the Cowboys. "I think we've unequivocally established the fact that the district attorney's office is treating Mr. Brent differently because of the helmet that he wears," Milner told reporters Friday. "There's no disputing that now. Everybody down here knew it. Now it's out in un-contradicted, sworn testimony." By the way, the district
- Judge orders more monitoring for Cowboys DT DALLAS (AP) -- A judge has ordered more alcohol monitoring for a Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle awaiting trial on an intoxicated manslaughter charge. Josh Brent is charged in the Dec. 8 crash that killed Jerry Brown Jr., a Cowboys' practice squad player. Police say Brent's blood-alcohol level was twice the legal limit. Brent appeared in court Friday for a hearing. He's been free on 100,000 bond, but prosecutors say he violated the terms of his release by setting off an alcohol monitoring device and failing to download data from it as required. Judge Robert Burns said Friday that he would not raise Brent's bond, but ordered the extra monitoring. Brent's career remains on hold pending the outcome of the case. His trial date is scheduled for September on the intoxicated manslaughter charge.
- Prosecutors go after Brent's bond Prosecutors are going to court to have the bond revoked for a Dallas Cowboys player awaiting trial on an intoxication manslaughter charge. In court papers filed Thursday, prosecutors accused Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent of violating the terms of his release on bond by consuming alcohol and tampering with a device that detects the presence of alcohol in his body. That makes him Brent a threat to the public, the documents state. A hearing is scheduled for Friday morning. Brent has been free on a $100,000 bond since being charged in the Dec. 8 crash that killed practice squad player Jerry Brown Jr., a passenger in the car. Police say Brent had a blood-alcohol level twice the legal limit for driving. Brent's football career remains on hold pending the outcome of this case. He's scheduled for a fall trial date. The violations of the conditions of Brent's bond have been repeated and serious, said Debbie Denmon, spokeswoman for the Dallas County District Attorney's Office. ''Bond
- Secretive Romo procedure raises questions IRVING, Texas In 1998, a Dallas Cowboys quarterback missed a minicamp due to a "minor surgery" to remove something from his back. That was Troy Aikman. This is Tony Romo. In terms of the flood of outrage and humor directed at Romo, who did not participate in the team's OTA's that began Tuesday and who might need a few more weeks to full recover, the difference might just be that Aikman won three Super Bowls." "You've got to be smart this time of year, and I understand that," said Romo, explaining that if the Cowboys were readying for an actual game, he would be able to participate. "At the same time, you're ready to go, and you want to get back and get into it." Romo's procedure involved the removal of a cyst from his back, something that caused him to make mention to friends way back on April 10 of a "back problem." I'm told that the projected recovery time of a month suggests something of a complication: "A deep-tissue cyst"
- Dez Bryant: 'I've found myself' It's been 10 months since Dez Bryant's name last appeared in the police blotter. A domestic violence incident involving his mother put his reputation and, even worse, his career, in jeopardy. Since that time, though, the Cowboys' top receiver has kept his nose clean, enjoying a nice -- if unfamiliar -- stretch of tranquility. And there's a simple reason for the turnaround. "I found myself," Bryant said Tuesday, via ESPNDallas.com. "I'm comfortable with my life. I'm enjoying being in the NFL. I wish it could've been a couple years back, but I had to go through a couple of things to figure it out. I think I got it and I'm just more focused on my job and doing what I love to do and that's playing football." Following last July's arrest, Bryant agreed to attend counseling sessions and be held to strict behavioral guidelines with the Cowboys. He admits these measures helped get his life back on track. "Liste...
- Jerry Jones defends Jason Garrett Jason Garrett is not coaching for his job in 2013; at least that's what Cowboys owner, GM and kingpin Jerry Jones would have us believe about his embattled head coach. "Well, no, no he's not ... to the last question: Is Jason coaching for his job? No," Jones told the NFL Network. Jerry Jones may think that if he says Jason Garrett is his man enough times, he'll start to believe it himself. The problem is nothing about Garrett suggests that he's the right man for the Cowboys' head coaching position. "What we're doing is taking the assets that we have, and Jason being right at the top and certainly our premier asset, and we're using them to the best of our ability," Jones continued. The Cowboys have finished 8-8 two seasons in a row, missing the playoffs due to a week 17 loss to a divisional rival in both cases. One of the biggest problem the Cowboys seem to have is at the quarterback position. Tony Romo plays well mu...
