- Eight in the Box: RB status check How does each NFC West team look at running back, and what still needs to be done? Arizona Cardinals: This is a transitional year at the position for Arizona. Free-agent addition Rashard Mendenhall gets a shot to revive his career following a disappointing finish with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He's familiar with Bruce Arians' offense, giving him a head start over the competition. Ryan Williams has a shot at the job, too, but he's been injured and recently admitted to playing scared last season while trying to protect his surgically repaired knee.
- Eli Manning remains Giants' old reliable See, this is why the New York Giants like to keep their offseasons as dull and quiet as possible. Too often, the news you make this time of the year isn't the good kind. The Giants' OTA workout Tuesday featured two troubling items. First, there was the absence of wide receiver Hakeem Nicks, for as-yet unknown reasons, along with that of fellow star wideout Victor Cruz, who wants a new contract. Giants coach Tom Coughlin grumbled and expressed his irritation, which is an unfair thing coaches do to players who skip voluntary workouts, but ultimately this is a sign of a long-range Giants problem and not a short-term one.
- Cards' main risk protection in Mathieu deal Tyrann Mathieu's new contract with the Arizona Cardinals is making headlines for the financial particulars. These particulars mean a great deal to the people directly involved in negotiations. Agents, team negotiators and Mathieu himself have a stake in conditions attached to the reported $662,500 in bonus money available to the cornerback from LSU. The Cardinals were naturally going to seek risk protection in negotiating a contract with Mathieu, whose admitted problems with marijuana led to his banishment from the LSU program.
- Fisher's support good sign for Rok Watkins The one-game NFL suspension recently levied against St. Louis Rams guard Rokevious Watkins looked like the latest setback in his attempt to win over the team's coaching staff. After all, Watkins had reported to training camp overweight as a rookie last year. He then suffered a season-ending injury in September. Drawing a suspension under the NFL's substance-abuse policy was another strike against him. But with coach Jeff Fisher speaking out on Watkins' behalf Thursday, the second-year guard could find himself on firmer ground.
- Lions: On Brandon Pettigrew's drops I liked what I heard -- er, read -- from Detroit Lions tight end Brandon Pettigrew this week. As Tim Twentyman of the Lions' website writes, Pettigrew has pledged to rectify the series of negative plays he made last season. "I can't put what I did [last year] on anyone else," he said. "I take it upon myself to fix the drops or missed blocks, the plays that weren't made, the fumbles. That's on me and I take it upon myself. It's my problem to fix." Pettigrew fumbled four times in 2012, losing two of them, and dropped eight passes, according to ESPN Stats & Information.
- RG II wants his son to throw more, run less When you can't get RG III, you talk to RG II. As part of the futile attempt to satisfy the public appetite for news about Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III, his father has been doing interviews about Griffin's recovery from knee surgery, his prospects for next season and the circumstances under which he got injured in the first place. In this video interview with WJLA, Griffin II says he would have pulled Griffin III after the Redskins went up 14-0 on the Seahawks in the playoff game (a reasonable point of view that some of us were actually expressing in the press box at the time), and that Griffin III "absolutely" plans to be ready to play in the Week 1 "Monday Night Football" game against the Eagles.
- Jets are backbiting already? Cue the circus music and get out the clown suits. The zany New York Jets are at it again. This time, the annual backbiting is occurring earlier than usual. One anonymous Jets player told Mike Freeman of CBSSports.com that “80 to 90 percent” of the locker room does not want quarterback Mark Sanchez under center. That's a strong statement, especially considering Sanchez is in a four-way quarterback competition. "Everyone on the team likes Mark personally,” the Jets player said.
- QB matters most, with or without Crabtree The San Francisco 49ers, though unusually healthy in recent seasons, had a hard time recovering from injuries to return specialist Ted Ginn Jr. and top defensive lineman Justin Smith over the past two seasons. Bill Barnwell drives home that point in his latest piece for Grantland, one calling into question how the 49ers will recover from Michael Crabtree's injury. 2012 Michael Crabtree Receiving The piece also touched upon a subject we've discussed in some detail around here: Crabtree's improved production with Colin Kaepernick at quarterback.
- Tony Dungy earned spot among best Tony Dungy has been selected at No. 20 on our Greatest Coaches in NFL History list over on our main NFL page. I’d like to say I saw this one coming all the way, but I can’t. Truth is, I was covering the Buccaneers for The Tampa Tribune back when Dungy was hired to coach Tampa Bay in 1996, and I wasn’t so sure he’d make it through a single season. The Bucs started 0-5 and eventually got to 1-8. They looked even more hapless than they did in the Sam Wyche years.
- Dolphins' Ellerbe can build own legacy DAVIE, Fla. -- Dannell Ellerbe had to travel more than 1,100 miles south to escape Ray Lewis' large and overwhelming shadow. Coming off a Super Bowl victory, Ellerbe had a tough decision to make in free agency: He could either be heir apparent to Lewis -- the legendary Baltimore Ravens middle linebacker who retired in February -- or aim to build his own legacy at middle linebacker with the Miami Dolphins. Ellerbe opted not to spend the rest of his NFL career trying to fill Lewis' shoes in Baltimore.
